London with your pet

animal de compagnie à Londres

London is a vibrant, multicultural city full of opportunities. It’s love at first sight. As the English love their pets, London is one of the nicest capitals to live in with your furry friend.

Between “cat cafes,” “dog friendly” pubs, and numerous parks for walks, your pets will love London as much as you do. If you’re thinking of moving to London with your pet, here’s some useful information.

Travel preparations

Your pet (dog or cat) needs its own passport, issued by a veterinarian, which includes its name, date of birth, microchip or tattoo ID, and vaccination details. The passport can cost up to €30 plus vaccination fees.

To enter Great Britain, your pet must have:

  • A rabies vaccination at least 21 days before departure.
  • An electronic microchip or tattoo with an identification number, implanted before the latest rabies vaccine.
  • For dogs, a deworming treatment done 1 to 5 days before travel.

Puppies and kittens must meet the same conditions and cannot be younger than 12 weeks.

Restricted dog breeds include:

  • Pitbull Terrier
  • Japanese Tosa
  • Dogo Argentino
  • Fila Brasileiro

(See the “Dangerous Dogs Act 1991” for details.)

Animals generally cannot travel on the Eurostar (except guide dogs). You can take them by car through Eurotunnel (£18/€25) or certain ferry companies (Brittany Ferries, with quotas). Some airlines accept pets in the hold but not the cabin, requiring border inspection on arrival.

Life in London with Your Pet

London offers many places for dogs to enjoy, but finding pet-friendly accommodation can be challenging. Many landlords prohibit pets, but where accepted, contracts often specify details about the pet.

Since 2019, landlords cannot request larger deposits for pets; deposits are usually five weeks’ rent. Once settled, explore numerous parks and countryside walks.

If you need a pet sitter for an evening, weekend, or holiday, many offer in-home care or boarding.

Whether for a short visit or a permanent move, London is a wonderful city for you and your pets!
